Living in St. Augustine, FL is like being on a permanent vacation—but even locals need a change of scenery now and then. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend, outdoor adventure, or family-friendly fun, there are plenty of incredible getaways within a two-hour drive of our nation’s oldest city.
As someone who loves weekend getaways, I’m always taking note of what’s nearby for a quick escape. Here are some of my top recommendations, all close enough to get there and back before Monday morning.
1. Amelia Island – Charming, Quiet, and Coastal
Drive time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Nestled just north of Jacksonville, Amelia Island offers upscale charm with quiet beaches, historic inns, and a walkable downtown in Fernandina Beach (which, by the way, was ranked top 10 Beach Towns in The South for 2025!). Explore the boutique shops, enjoy fresh seafood, or take a sunset cruise. It’s the perfect mix of relaxation and elegance.
2. Gainesville – Nature Trails & College Town Vibes
Drive time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Gainesville might be known for the University of Florida, but it’s also a haven for outdoor lovers. Visit Paynes Prairie Preserve, take a stroll through the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, or kayak through the crystal-clear springs nearby. It’s a laid-back option with surprising natural beauty.
3. Flagler Beach – A Laid-Back Coastal Vibe
Drive time: 45 minutes
If you want a close-by option that’s still full of charm, Flagler Beach delivers. This sleepy beach town has a classic boardwalk, friendly locals, and plenty of beachfront diners. It’s a low-key escape that feels worlds away from the bustle of everyday life.
4. Orlando – Theme Parks & High-Energy Fun
Drive time: 2 hours
Yes, it’s touristy—but even locals need a little Disney magic once in a while. Orlando offers world-class entertainment, shopping, and dining, whether you’re into rollercoasters or spa weekends. Bonus tip: visit during the off-season to skip the long lines.
Why This Matters If You're Buying a Home in St. Augustine
One of the things that makes St. Augustine real estate so appealing is its location. You’re close enough to enjoy the best of Florida—from quiet islands to lively cities—without ever being too far from home. It’s part of why people fall in love with living here and why I love helping them find their place in this incredible region.
Thinking of relocating or buying a second home in the area? I’d love to help you find the perfect fit.
